Fair Luxury Pledge

In January I was one of the first 50 businesses to take the Fair Luxury Pledge.

Fair Luxury is a collaboration of jewellery industry changemakers with a vision for a responsible and sustainable future for people and planet. We believe that together we can create a more equitable industry.

Why take the Fair Luxury Pledge?

As you’ll know I’m working on improving my business right now; a shiny new website is coming later this year! As part of the improvements I wanted to let you know more about my commitment to being a responsible jewellery business. When I attended the first Ethical Making symposium in 2017 and heard, from makers like Ute Decker and Greg Valerio, the impact that using precious metals has on both the planet and the miners that extract it and their communities. It lit a fire in me to make changes in my business to be more sustainable and to contribute to a better working environment for miners, and the environments and landscapes that I'm inspired by. You can read more about my own Ethical Making talk which I did the following year here.

What's my pledge?

My Fair Luxury Pledge was this: I pledge to plant 1 tree for every order over £100 in 2021 as a commitment to helping the environment by rewilding. If clients are ordering a set of rings for a celebration I'll plant one for every person in the relationship.”

Working on it.

There are lots of ways for a business like mine to make an impact and make a difference. Obviously not being a jeweller would be one of them; but that won’t pay the bills!

  • Jewellery - offering different metals; Recycled, Fairtrade and Single Mine Origin.

  • Packaging - using recycled and recyclable materials in my packaging.

  • Renewable energy - For my home and studio.

  • Carbon footprint - Offsetting the business carbon footprint.

  • Contributing to rewilding and/or reforestation projects in Scotland and further afield.

This is part of a long term commitment by me to "work on it". It should be a continual work in progress. I'm sure I'll get it wrong, I'm not perfect, but I'm sure I'll learn a lot along the way!I want to make conscious decisions in all aspects of my business. To make sure I'm supporting the industry and people all the way back to the mine. I want to make sure no human is harmed in the making of my jewellery. I want to support and improve the environment, both at home from the effects of human erosion and where silver and gold is being mined by supporting bullion suppliers who offer alternatives as well as traceability back to the mine.

Plant 1 tree for every order?

Yes! 1 tree for every order over £100 and 1 tree for every person in your relationship if you're buying rings for a wedding or commitment ceremony.I’ve been researching charities for my Fair Luxury Pledge such as Ecologi , The Future Forest Company, Scotland the Big Picture and Trees For Life who I already have a personal forest with. So all I have to do now is choose one! You are my accountability buddies right?!You’ll be pleased to know, especially if you’ve bought from me in 2021 - I’ve been keeping a tally of orders that require a tree to be planted. So far I’ve got 12 trees to plant already! Which is wonderful! Here's to many more!
